Revive your steamer basket and Varoma

Here’s a fast and easy trick to revive your steamer basket and your Varoma and make them look like new again!

scruffy steamer basket
Oh dear. My Thermomix internal steamer basket is looking decidedly scruffy. Read on for my quick tip on reviving it!

As you may know, Madame Thermomix currently has 5 Thermomixes and is working on earning her sixth. I guess you could call it my Thermo-family: 2 TM31’s, 2 TM5’s and a beautiful TM6! So I took one of my older internal steamer baskets out of the dishwasher this morning and noticed it was looking decidedly scruffy and almost dried out. We live in a hard water area and I recently changed dishwasher detergent and I think these elements could be having an effect. No matter, all you need is a bit of cooking oil and you’ll get the basket’s high-quality food-grade plastic looking like new in no time!

Wow! A few drops of cooking oil on some kitchen roll, a bit of gentle rubbing, and hey presto! My Thermomix steamer basket looks as good as new!

Today I used a neutral cooking oil (grapeseed oil) and any other cooking oil you regularly use, such as olive oil and sunflower oil, will do just as nicely. A few drops on some kitchen towel and bit of gentle rubbing and voilà – your steamer basket and your Varoma will look as good as new!

Another way to get a similar result for your steamer basket would be to steam some rice or vegetables or protein and add a few drops of cooking oil to the steaming liquid. Try it and let me know in the comments how you get on 😉

Happy Thermomix cooking with Madame Thermomix and Why is There Air!
